Sending out “Save the Date” cards may have started off as a purely “functional” part of the wedding planning (making sure your guests are available on your wedding date). However, modern “Save the Date” cards are a bit more complex and they need quite a lot of attention to detail too.

You don’t need to include an RSVP card. You may think it’s a good idea if you want to get a headcount sooner, but the harsh truth is that most of the guests will forget about the “Save the Date” RSVPs if they are sent out too early.
You don’t have to include anything else than the card either. But it’s definitely a good idea, especially if you plan on having a destination wedding and/or you have many out-of-town guests. Not only will you help guests plan ahead for your Big Day, but you will also make your job easier when the time comes to send out the invitations.
“Save the Date” cards can be a lot more informal than your wedding invitations – so you can definitely have plenty of fun with their design. Even more, you can actually create these yourself (which is excellent if you want to save some money).
No matter how informal your “Save the Date” cards may be, keep one thing in mind: it is not acceptable to include registry information on them (and it’s even less acceptable to do it on the invitations proper). The only place where you are encouraged to include registry information is your wedding website (and if you don’t have one, your Maid of Honor and parents have the duty to spread the word).
